When can an umbilical catheter be used?

In most cases, after birth, an umbilical venous catheter (UVC) is used during the first 3-7 days or less.
Doctors use an umbilical venous catheter to administer intravenous fluids and medications to a baby.  Sometimes, it may remain in place until the baby is 2 weeks old.
