How do you place an umbilical artery catheter?
An umbilical artery catheter can be placed in either the high position or the low position, though the high position is associated with lower complication rates. In the high position, the umbilical catheter position lies above the diaphragm, between thoracic vertebrae T6 and T9.
The preferred umbilical catheter position of the tip of the umbilical venous catheter is typically in the cephalad portion of the inferior vena cava or at the inferior vena cava–right atrial junction. The air might be introduced inadvertently into the intrahepatic portal venous system at the time of umbilical venous catheter insertion.
